Otoacoustic emissions (OAE) testing is performed to evaluate the performance of your inner ear, known as the cochlea. It measures otoacoustic emissions or sounds given by your inner ear when responding to a sound. Hair cells in your inner ear respond to a sound by vibrating, producing a very quiet sound that echoes back into the middle ear. This sound is the OAE that is measured by an otoacoustic emissions measuring device. If you have normal hearing, you will produce normal OAE but if your hearing loss is greater than 25 – 30 decibels (dB), you will produce these very soft sounds. Unlike other sensory systems, the inner ear generates signals similar to those it is designed to receive, known as otoacoustic emissions, representing a unique characteristic of this sensory organ.
